Venue: Grand PavilionSeating: General Admission Description ABOUT THE EVENT Julia Cruz, conductor Stephanie Shonekan, narrator The classic children’s work Peter and the Wolf has thrilled audiences for almost 90 years. Whether it’s your first journey into the forest or you’re bringing your whole family on the tale, this is a show for everyone! For this pair of all-ages Sunday fairytale matinees, narrated respectively in English and in Spanish, the National Orchestral Institute + Festival invites curious listeners to come close and witness each of Prokofiev’s timeless characters leap to instrumental life: Peter on the strings, cat as clarinet, the wobbly oboe of a duck and the growling menace of the wolf as french horns. Presented in The Clarice’s Grand Pavilion, with ample seating for grown-ups and space on the stairs for children, NOI+F’s rendition of Peter and the Wolf is sure to gift young ears with the joy of music for a lifetime. Kids and parents are invited to join us early for specially themed youth activities, including visual art workshops and mask making. The 2PM presentation will be performed in English and will include ASL interpretation. The 4PM performance will be performed in Spanish. Hiram Whittle 01/17/1931 – 09/27/2021 Mr. Hiram Whittle was the first African American student to enter the University of Maryland at College Park. In 1949, he applied for admission as an engineering student and was denied admission due to his race. In 1951, Mr. Whittle was granted admission to the University of Maryland at College Park, after much persistence; several years of legal action; a petition to Baltimore City court; and assistance from the NAACP. As UMD’s first African American undergraduate student, Mr. Whittle pursued coursework in Engineering Mechanics and Drawing, Sociology, Government and Politics. He left the university in June 1952 without completing his degree. Mr. Hiram Whittle was awarded a UMD Honorary Degree in 2020. Blessing Asuguo Mbang '99 07/05/1977 – 01/03/2022   Blessing Mbang began her academic career at UMD in 1995. She was a part of CMSE’s 1st LSAMP Bridge that was sponsored by NSF. She was the first LSAMP Bridge cohort in the CMSE in 1995. She graduated in 1999 with a degree in Geology. Michael L. Cherry ’84; 1957 – 1985 Michael Cherry, a 1984 electrical engineering graduate of the University of Maryland, was killed in an automobile accident on October 29, 1985. Michael is remembered for his persistence, commitment to helping others, life, engineering, teaching, and tutoring, The Michael L. Cherry  Memorial Scholarship was created by the UMCP chapter of the Black Engineers Society, in conjunction with the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering and Michael’s family and friends. This scholarship supports active members in the Black Engineers Society in the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Derrick Cobey ’93 Derrick Cobey graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor’s degree. He was a Vice President of Finance at Harmony Information Systems, starting in March 2008. He then began working at hCentive Inc in May 2016, becoming the General Manager and  Chief Product Officer. He left hCentive Inc in December of 2019. For his latest position, he was the Chief Technology Officer at Mediware’s Human and Social Services Division. In the three sessions during spring semester 2022, we grounded our investigation of Jewish identity and experience of antisemitism in an exploration of history, identity, and opportunities for solidarity. We hope that this series will validate and affirm Jewish members of the UMD family and give all UMD community members greater understanding and more tools to recognize and counter antisemitism when we see it. Antisemitism, like other forms of oppression, traffics in stereotypes, generalities, and assumptions. These tropes are all around us—in literature and popular culture and in everyday conversations on the street or on our campus. When left unexamined and unchallenged, anti-Jewish tropes can in extreme cases lead to violence and in more everyday circumstances cause microaggressions and other tensions that degrade the vibrant and inclusive climate we want UMD to be. What’s more, as this programming series explored, anti-Jewish bias and antisemitism work hand in hand with other forms of oppression, including anti-Black racism, anti-immigrant bias, and homophobia, to name just a few. Addressing all forms of oppression are integral to ODI’s work of helping the university achieve its diversity, equity and inclusion goals, and this programming will play an important role.
